Behind the Brush with Ashley Gilbreath

I met Ashley while shopping at Scott’s Antique Market in Atlanta! She was the sweetest to talk to and we later connected on social media. A few weeks later, she asked to have one of my pieces displayed in the Southern Living Show house and the rest is history! She currently uses my work in her design projects and my small works are available at her 30A Parish Shoppe Location in Rosemary Beach, FL!

I personally think Ashley’s work is such a cool mix of layered, traditional elements with a splash of the unexpected. She and her team are amazing to work with and have a unique design approach!

How would you describe your design style?

We say our design style is casually elegant. We strive to create a lived-in space that's ready to go and take on all that life offers. Beautiful yet functional, while incorporating pieces old and new.

When starting a new project, what are the main elements you focus on in a space?

When starting a project, our focus is how the space will be lived in. Does dad like to kick his feet up at the end of the day or does everyone sit down together to eat? When we can marry the clients’ lifestyle to a beautiful aesthetic, that makes for a successful project.

What are some pieces you tend to splurge on in a room vs items you can save on?

It’s different for everyone, but I personally like to splurge on the one-of-a-kind pieces that make a space unique to the home.

When it comes time to select the artwork, where do you start? What do you look for?

When we get to artwork in a project, we lay out the space to visually see all the fabrics and colors. We always want to marry the selections with the piece, while also bringing in a fun new element. Sometimes it’s something bold and unexpected, other times it’s the perfect final touch to tie it all together.

Favorite unexpected place to hang artwork?

We love to suspend artwork over drapery! It makes for a beautiful backdrop to any piece and helps create a visual focal point in the space.

We loved working with you! How did you incorporate KMFA into your projects?

We love incorporating Katie’s small paper pieces in any space because we have the freedom to play with the size. Even if it’s small, we can mat and frame it out to make a big impact in the space.

Best design advice when It comes to art?

Invest in pieces that you really love. While it can be used to tie in a room together, it’s also meant to display a unique insight to your own personal taste. Find what you love and will want to see in your home for years to come!
