Behind the Brush with Courtney Giles

I have been a long time follower of Courtney Giles Interiors. Courtney is extremely talented and has been featured in numerous magazine publications including the cover of Atlanta Homes Magazine. I was so excited when Courtney reached out about a potential commission featuring either large scale canvas pieces or a multitude of minis…. she went with the wall of minis. And boy, was I glad she did! It turned out amazing!!!!!!

I personally think Courtney’s work is timeless, traditional style mixed with collected antiques and textured fabrics. She provides a fresh view on how the home can be both updated yet traditional.

How would you describe your design style?

I would describe my style as traditional with a twist. I love antiques, but I love updating and mixing them with contemporary art. I also like mixing a clean lined piece of furniture with a more contemporary vibe with an old architectural fragment. I’m always mixing old with new.

When starting a new project, what are the main elements you focus on in a space?

This varies from client to client and project to project. Sometimes we are starting from scratch, and there is an overall vision we are trying to achieve. Most of the time there are antiques, pieces of art, and a few family heirlooms that we know upfront we have to work into the spaces.

What are some pieces you tend to splurge on in a room vs items you can save on?

I always encourage investing in gorgeous antiques and art. Beautiful pillow fabrics and custom lamp shades are other splurges worth the money.

When It comes time to select the artwork, where do you start? What do you look for?

Art is so personal it can be tricky. Sometimes we reach out to artists to commission pieces specific to our client’s particular spaces, and sometimes we pull multiple pieces from various galleries to try in the spaces. This can help us get a feel for what direction that clients want to move in with color, style, and composition.

Favorite unexpected place to hang artwork?

Sometimes I’ll frame a tiny piece to display on an easel on a chest, side table, or bedside table. Art doesn’t always have to be hung!

We loved working with you! How did you incorporate KMFA into your project?

Ditto! We commissioned fifteen small square pieces on paper that we had framed alike and hung in a grid pattern in our client’s breakfast room. I love a series, and it is less expected than a large painting (but can be even more dramatic).

Best design advice when It comes to art?

If you fall in love at first sight chances are you will love it forever. If you have to try to talk your self into a piece you may always question it. Go with your gut!
