Small Works, Big Impact
Smaller artwork doesn't mean they can't have a "big" impact in a space!
I am a big fan of collecting and purchasing small works for even my own home. Yep, I collect from other artist ALLLLL the time (and you should too)! But where to start? First, you need to think about the spaces that might have smaller areas to fill... bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens. Think about rooms that might have limited wall space or little wall jut outs. With open floor plans now-a-days, wall space is valuable!
One of my favorite projects was with my dear friend and designer Minnette Jackson. She worked with this particular client on updating their formal living room & dining room that you see right when you walk in the door. Like most designers, she used some of their existing furniture and then added in more transitional style pieces to bring the rooms up-to-date. One of the heirloom pieces that was incorporated into the space was a family horse portrait painting. Keeping that in mind, Minnette commissioned me to do two smaller abstract pieces over a gorgeous demi loon. This mix of old and new was a perfect marriage. All the artwork became "friends," not competition. Now, when you walk into the finished living room you see a well-balanced mix of traditional, transitional, old and new all accomplished by small works and an heirloom piece.
